Build a connected document.
Start in Adobe Express
Open your document, select Add-ons, and search for Auto Contents and Tabs. Add it to your workspace, then open its panel.
- Under Chapters, add a title and choose its start page. Add up to 3 chapters in Free or 30 in Plus.
- Under Appearance, choose a contents style and insertion position. Final PDF page positions include added contents pages; original numbers do not.
- Turn on chapter tabs or the return footer only where there is room in your artwork. Choose up to six chapters for edge tabs and use short labels.
- Prepare the preview, click the highlighted contents and tab areas, and check the destinations.
- Choose Export PDF in this Add-on. The downloaded file contains the navigation. The normal Express download command does not include the Add-on's generated navigation.
Refresh after edits
Save keeps your chapter list and appearance in the Express document. After adding, moving or removing pages, click Refresh pages and export again. Chapter targets follow stable page identities; deleted targets require choosing a replacement.
Use existing contents artwork
Choose Link my existing contents, select its page, and create your chapter list. In the Express canvas, select one text box or shape for each entry, then choose Map selected area beside that chapter. All mapped areas must be on the selected contents page and fit within it. After resizing that page, map the areas again.
Activate Plus
Plus is a $9.99 USD one-time purchase through Stripe, separate from any Adobe subscription. After payment confirmation, copy the ACT license code into Already purchased? Activate Plus in the panel. The code also appears in the payment description on your Stripe receipt. Reuse the code on another device you own. No account registration is required for Free.
PDF readers and supported documents
Navigation uses standard PDF page destinations and bookmarks. Reader support varies; open the PDF in a reader that supports links. Use unsigned, unencrypted PDF pages without custom cropping or rotation. Some signatures, dynamic forms and unusual page sizes cannot be processed. Contents titles support Latin and CJK characters; replace characters that the multilingual font cannot display.
